Study summary
Why bar speed and whole-system speed are not interchangeable
- Measurement validity
- Velocity-based training
In brief
This study compared barbell velocity with the velocity of the combined person-barbell centre of mass during back squats. The two approaches produced different values, especially at higher lifting velocities. Its practical message is that load-velocity zones should be specific to the measurement method rather than transferred directly between devices.
What was studied
Twelve healthy, strength-trained participants performed back squats while a linear encoder, an inertial measurement unit, AlphaPWR and 3D motion capture collected data concurrently.
What the source reported
- 01
The person-barbell centre-of-mass measure registered lower mean propulsive velocity than the two barbell-mounted methods.
- 02
The difference between centre-of-mass and barbell velocity increased as lifting velocity increased.
- 03
The 3D motion-capture comparison showed a similar measurement pattern.
How to interpret the findings
The study had a small sample and did not determine which measurement target is better for programming. It supports method-specific reference values, not direct conversion between devices.
